Now THIS is the real way to see Chapman's Peak!

After reading the link about judging trip reports, I am daring to put my first try at a larger video clip. And hoping everyone will see the heart with which it was done and not the (shaky) hand that tried it! Embarassed

I would be terribly grateful if I could get a few pointers, as I was teaching myself, using Windows Movie Maker and struggled a bit. The lengh was longer than I wanted , but the darn cutting tool would cut ALL away and not just the pices I wanted out - hence having to watch me clean the camera lens!

I also had to save it in a lower quality because it was so big, BUT it still took 7 hours to upload (OK, the internet speed on the platteland might also have had a bit of an influence...). Inspite of this, I find the quality and pixels really poor. Can someone please advise me in what format and how to save it so that it looks better without being so big? I still have the original size too, but did not want to scare everyone off thinking they were downloading a Hollywood blockbuster judging by the sheer size - to only find my less than 7 minutes video clip a total let down. Well, who knows, with a few pointers I might still join the ranks of Spielberg, Scorsese and Polanski!

Till then, in the meantime my burnt offering to those I know will appreciate my efforts more than the actual job, cause you know my love of bikes and that I'm crazy enough to share!

Here goes:

Well done Jinx.  The video is absolutely fine.  Working with video is a real PITA, largely due to our typically under-resourced PCs and pathetic internet bandwidth - and yes, it takes many hours (at least one hour per minute of video).

Uploading to Youtube is essential - no downloading of actual video files.  Also, Youtube has special means of streaming it to viewers efficiently, and they fix up the files to improve their quality.

Just one thing - you can embed the video in our forum (instead of providing just a link).  To do this:

  1. In Youtube, click 'Share' then 'Embed'.  Select the embed code and copy it.
  2. In your post on the forum, click the '<>' icon in the toolbar (between the camera and the 'abc').
  3. Paste your embed code into the popup box - voila!

It will come out like this:

Great video, and I actually picked up a few tips from YOU ! I like the beographical info you provided... Here is one of mine - I use my iPad and iMovie. Or even better, iMovie on Mac, whichhas more options.

A tip I can share - initially I thought you cant use copyright music on YouTube, but in fact you can, it just means you cant view it in certain countries, but you can view it in South Africa.

Hey Nic

Talking about copyright - there is a lot of music published under a Creative Commons license.  It allows the author to specify more options for the use of their work - such as "non-commercial" and/or "with attribution".

There a whole websites with uploaded music, and it is really nice to discover something totally new and original to put on your video.
