Nags Head

After all the rain of the last few weeks the perfect weather of Sunday was truly appreciated. No wind, perfect sun and just enough snow on the mountain peaks to remind us that this is a winter run. About 9 bikes gathered at Engen, Plattekloof. A few first timers, a number of regulars and then also some that have not ridden with us for a while. A relaxing cruise down the N1 to the Southern Suburbs. At this point I should make it clear that I do not have a passport for the Southern Suburbs – it is all just a beautiful lush green blurr to me. Brian led the ride and pulled in at an Engen, where Dave joined us with another group of riders. By now we were 14 bikes and 17 people. The weather was perfectThe weather was perfect The manager of Naggs Head was there to meet us. A table was made available for the helmets. The filter coffee pots ran out before everybody got coffee – not a good omen. Fortunately it was only a few minutes before the next round came, after that nobody ever waited for a top-up. The last people just got their coffee when the food was served. Toast in baskets and a plate with two eggs, bacon and tomato. The food was very well prepared and tasteful. It could not quite be described as a large helping, so most of the men had an extra slice of toast with jam. The breakfast and bottomless coffee (inclusive of the tip) cost R35 per person. ...and so was the company...and so was the company Due to the very quick service we were finished in about 30 minutes after arriving. NOBODY left, we just sat there having good conversations until the lunch crowd started arriving. Alvin, Hannes and myself then went back over Ou Kaapse Weg, left to Houtbay and then a coastal cruise back to Campsbay. At Campsbay we turned up and went over the mountain. I stopped to take some photos of Campsbay. Hannes carried on and Alvin joined us, next we rode to signal hill. I will let the photos tell the story. (I'll try again to load the pictures, after talking to our webmaster :( ) PS This is a very cryptic version of the breakfast run, I am leaving the detail for the participants to fill in.

Lovely ride, not very long though. I thought breakfast not as good as some we've had recently. Thanks to all for lively conversation and good organisation.

The topic of what to order for breakfast is probably more difficult to sort out than world peace. If everybody orders what they want it is a virtually impossible for the kitchen to get all the food out at the same time, AND the bill is an absolute nightmare to sort out. The other option is a set menu. Always to much food for the ladies and never enough food for the men. Even though the helpings very small at Nags Head I must say that the price corresponded. Personally I am in favour of the small helpings that Nags Head served. Then I am not bloated when I get on the bike. It is then also practical to take another ride after the event, on top of signal hill we had an ice cream. I am toying with the idea to promote informal after-breakfast rides. For example the next ride is to Rawsonville, what about a ride to Hermanus after that for an afternoon snack? The idea here would be for a few bikes to do another 100 to 200 km to the next spot, similar arrangement as with the morning ride. It could be the perfect excuse to get out of a lunch arrangement with the in-laws, but it is expected that a large portion of the group will head straight back home. My idea is to extend a breakfast run into a day ride. The "next" stop can be discussed on the forum in the week leading up to the ride. I am looking forward to see how the members react to this.

Feelgood, are you just stirring or do you really have no idea what it takes to put a group ride together? What do you think is going to happen when a group of 40 people show up at the same time and the establishment has not reserved seats and prepared for such a big group? Join an organized group ride and have a good look to see how busy the committee members are to make the members have a trouble free and smooth function. Lets get back to the thread please. Could we please get feedback to show who would be interested in an extended day ride (after a standard breakfast run).
