Mystery ride to .... Eendekuil

Eendekuil was the destination of the Mystery Ride yesterday. Great thanks to Geoff for organising this very enjoyable event! The routes, weather, venue were perfect. The 37 bikes split into an off-road group led by Geoff Russel and a on-road group with Brian Messenger as leader. The split was 22 offroaders (incl 4 ladies!) and no less than 11 pillions! The road group were 15 bikes with 5 pillions. The offroad group split into two groups - leading group with Geoff and following group with Neil Terry. The road group went on a trip past Worcester, Wolseley, Tulbach, Piketberg to Eendekuil. I believe it was a most enjoyable ride. They stopped at Tulbach "Kuierbossie restaurant" for an exeptional breakfast with very good service at very reasonable price. The off-road group travelled quite a distance to the first dirt (just beyond Durbanville). A section of this road has been paved since I last rode there. Past Klipheuwel and Riebeeck Wes, Gouda and eventually Piketberg and Eendekuil. Geoff had to cut the dirtroute bit short due to time constraints, so the last stretch was on tar. (Geoff, it would be great if you could show us the roue on a picture/map on the forum) The surface of the dirt roads were as perfect as you can expect. Very little dust, no difficult mud or water, sunshine, little wind. What more can one ask. We were very lucky that the surface had time to dry a bit. Long sections of that road will be a nightmare when wet! Some potholes rattled my teeth, especially one near Riebeeck, but that was driver error. The mirrors had to be re-adjusted. Fortunately we were standing at the time, negating most of the shock. En route to Riebeeck WesEn route to Riebeeck Wes At regular intervals the road had a patch of clayish soil with narrow dry tracks. Bit un-nerving to feel the slight sideways movement of the tyres on the soft undersoil. The key was to keep your balance & line and trust the bike. Steve and Pillion bought some land out there (buy now, pay later at the dealer :): Fortunately a soft landing, minor damage to the GSSteve and Pillion bought some land out there (buy now, pay later at the dealer :): Fortunately a soft landing, minor damage to the GS Eendekuil Hotel is a new venue and we were their first customers (at least in large number). The owners (Johan and Magda) bought the very neglected building and are restoring it to a hotel that would cater for off-road trips in the area (local farms and private land, outrides to Sederberge/Wuppertal/Middelpos etc). They are GS riders themselves, which means they will know what the riders want. This sounds very exciting since many of the short/local routes would be rather unique and not accessable to the general public. See www.eendekuil.co.za Riding into Eendekuil I had this feeling of satisfaction - a real mystery changing to excitement and pleasant surprise. Arriving at the venue, we were greeted by a feast of smiling faces and many bikes. Few surprises awaited us. First a young man, Trevor, rushed about offering each driver parking on the gravel, a wooden disk to put under the sidestand. Have you ever had such service, anywhere?! At the entrance we were treated to a cocktail glass of rum, fruit juice and tiny ice pellets. Hmmmm.... an aquired taste in my books, especially the first few sips. By the end I actually enjoyed it. Next surprise was the fantastic buffet meal. And friendly service. And very quick (self) serving. Two ticks and everyone had his meal. I now realise I have only two pictures at the venue - please help & post your pictures taken at Eendekuil! After lunch everyone scattered homeward, each in his own direction. A small group went with Geoff to do the Aurora loop of the offroad route that was cut out in the morning. I believe it was great! I am sorry I missed it. And the last surprise - could it be that there was a HD here before us? HD tracks?HD tracks? Great ride, great venue, no more mystery. Thanks Geoff!

It was a great ride. Thanks to Geoff for organising it. I rode at the back of the 2nd Dirt Group. what started off as a slow almost boring ride became a lot of fun with the few mud sections. Russell was a joy to ride with - he was having such a lot of fun making waves though pools, spraying me with mud, etc. Its great to see a rider having so much fun. The two of us were easily the filthiest people of the day. After lunch Geoff lead a small party back to CT via dirt, which was also awesome. There was a small section of soft sand (not too deep) - and it was the first time I've really felt confident on sand, and actually enjoyed it. I got home dirty and tired, but with a huge self-satisfied grin on my face.
There are so many problems in this world. Luckily there's a wristband available for almost all of them.

Thanks Brian for leading us Roadies... It was a great day (especially the lunch) except for the part where one of the kids at the side of the road (it looked like a school or something on our RHS as we approached Capetown on the way back) threw a stone at the RED GS in front of me but hit my bike. Luckily just a chip on the bottom of the fairing. Andy1200 Never ride faster than your guardian angel can fly!!!

So Tracey was off to the airport earlier than expected for her visit to JHB- what to do with myself on this beautifull Sunday. I phone Geoff and invite myself to meet the groups for lunch at Eendekuil. In luck I am when just outside I meet up with Brian's road group; how nice to for a change just ride tar and not gravel...at least the kit stayed clean this time. Eventually the off road guys get there after some trouble on route - I get greeted by some confused faces "what are you doing here and why are you not dirty? The food was amazing and I will defnitely be back there soon - a really nice place and not to far from CPT. Thank you to Geoff, Neil and Brian for organising and leading the rides !! NO - I am not 100% converted to tar.....just yet. Johan de Jager "It's all about the ride, nothing else"

Thanks Geoff, It was a great ride and loads of fun. I got home just as the sun was setting. My thirst for beer almost made me stop along the way (the better the ride the more I look forward to the beer afterwards.) It was just great, pity the rest of the off-road group did not join us for the after lunch session.

Ok, now my interest is piqued: # The after-lunch dirt ride - did it go via 'Het Kruis', North to the dirt road that turns off left at the bridge towards the 'Sandvelder' cottages? # Then you would have ridden west, north of the Piketberg range, and joined the Aurora-Redelinghuys road where you turn left towards Aurora. # At Aurora you end up on the R299 to Piketberg (tar) and eventually join the N7, unless you head south on dirt towards Bergrivier, Hopefield, Darling, Malmesbury. If you saw the radar station on top of the mountain at Aurora - you would have been looking at our farm... regards Charles [http://honeybadger.net Honey Badger IT Services]

I have been asked via this thread and also on e mail more about the off road ride we did after lunch: Firstly let me steal some of Charles's info: # The after-lunch dirt ride - did it go via 'Het Kruis', North to the dirt road that turns off left at the bridge towards the 'Sandvelder' cottages? Correct but carrying on straight and up and over the mountain pass. # Then you would have ridden west, north of the Piketberg range, and joined the Aurora-Redelinghuys road where you turn left towards Aurora. Semi correct in that when we joined the tar I turned right and immediately left. This road can be a real bugger if the sand is dry as this is "sandveld" and the sand can get nice and deep in places. However after some rain all we had were a few patches of wettish deep sand that created no problems. This road joins the N7 12kms from Moreesburg. I still wanted to do some extra tracks that were planned however the time again caught us and we drove home on tar from Morreesburg. I got home just before 6. The detour was well worth while. The scenery was beautiful, roads were really nice and we kept our speed at 80kph. However for those that are joining the West Coast ride in the next few weeks you might just be surprised by a detour or two.

Hi Guys Just a quick thanks to everyone involved with the arrangements, and esp to Brian for leading us roadies. I put 680km on the bike on Sunday, most for one day on the 800 so far. Reckon it's ready for longer trips now! Going to Plattekloof at 7:00am I saw 4 degrees on the clocks going over Palmiet. For those of you complaining about the cold once it got up over eleven degrees: sissies! ;-) Ride back to Kleinmond after susnset was bliss. Road was unbeleivably quiet and no wind. thanks again to every one for a great day.
