4am: Sunday morning, why did I wake up? I have this urge to get on my motorcycle and just ride. Check my wallet, only enough for one tank of petrol. Where to go? MMM. Read about a day ride in Paarl on the forum a while back. Go alone or call somebody in the club before 6am on a Sunday morning to join, I better not. I only have Corné and Johan de Jagers number on my cell. Common sense gets the better of me and I decide to sleep until sun rise. As piece of mind I know that my insurance does have a Towline to call should the motorcycle give problems, just hope they know where to find me.
7am: Sitting on the stoep having breakfast, contemplating the day ahead. Gorgeous golden sun rise. What time does the Paarl Mountain Reserve open? 8am, 9am? Decide that 8am sounds about right. I take time lubing the chain and removing my top-box, would rather go with the tank-bag to hold my water and snacks. Clean my visor and windshield with Duster Plus.
8am: Filling up at Sasol and buying necessary stuff. Chewing gum, water and jellybeans.
8:15am: On the road north. See a lot of roadies at the Winelands Onestop.
8:50am: The fun starts. After getting a bit lost in Paarl, I get to the place I wanted to be. I didn’t want to start the trip near the Taalmonument side but on the opposite side. You have to drive thru Paarl to get there.
My experience on gravel has been limited to the odd gravel road in and around Durbanville. Take it slow, 40 kph feels fine. No standing up yet, should consider doing one of those intro courses. Past a couple of cyclist on my way up doing 20 kph. Do they do that for fun?
Reached the crossroads, go down or go right towards Paarl rock? Right!!
Crossroads
What!!! R 27 for entry, alright then, I mean, I have come this far, not going to turn around now.
