Intro Course 19 April 2008 host by CountryTrax

During the week leading up to this particular course some wet weather was predicted, however nothing could dampen my eagerness to attend the course and judging by the friendly faces I greeted at Nelsons Creek I knew it would be a splendid day. We all assembled for some coffee and muffins, the usual banter and getting to know fellow course attendees at one of the many wonderful facilities offered by Nelsons Creek, what a great venue for motorcycle training. Parked bikes at Nelsons CreekParked bikes at Nelsons Creek ..........Our instructors for the day, Leon and Johan quickly got us all settled in and down to business. We were given an introductory talk and demonstration on safety gear and given advice on applicability. The static motorcycle posture demonstrations mostly facilitated by Johan was of tremendous value and we soon got to practice these techniques ourselves while doing various cone exercises. Probably one of the most important techniques to learn is how to correctly pickup your motorcycle. With tongue in cheek I must admit that the Cape Town way of picking up a motorcycle is defiantly easier and better on your back as apposed to the Gauteng way. Johan showed us the technique on shuffling backwards with you back to the motorcycle and utilising a straight back while picking up your motorcycle as apposed to grabbing it by the handle bar and jerking the motorcycle up. Johan and LeonJohan and Leon Johan showing us how it's doneJohan showing us how it's done ............The cone exercises taught us how to utilise balance and weight shifting for easier maneuverability and it become very apparent on one of the many short rides on the farm. The short rides also kept the day exciting and it was a wonderful opportunity to view the Nelsons Creek farm. Cones being packed outCones being packed out ..............The crowning of the day was to pass the emergency stop on gravel by using your front wheel and a locked back wheel. Yes it sounds daunting but I can assure you that you will appreciate the skill gained! Both instructors where extremely patient and even the people that didn't pass most certainly benefited from the tuition. All in all this course is well worth the money and in my view a must for every single enduro motorcycle owner. You will feel so much more comfortable with your motorcycle and appreciate it's capabilities in off road conditions. I have already booked my place for the rider/pillion training with CountryTrax. A big thanks to CountryTrax, Nelsons Creek and the instructors, Leon and Johan. Keep up the good work! Nice one Corné. You are quite right - this course is a must even for those who have GS's but don't see themselves going off-road. I did this course because I could not find an on-road course, and Leon was right - it does improve your road riding ability as well.

SPOT ON Charles. BMW keeps on talking about improving sales of ON road bikes. Yet there are no on road courses. :(

Where are the road only voices ....encouragment and support please!!!:-) (no whines) I person is hardly a market for a track training day. Neil it is a fine line between asking politely, moaning, wining, .... I think it is clear enough that some road users wants training, lets see what happens.

Hijack '''off''' - this is an off-road thread - non-GS owners take note! ;-) Back to the topic: it is a shame BMW applies the same ratio of sales targets (30:70 on : off-road bike sales) in SA as in Germany. SA is designed for off-road - lots of sunshine, many 'ondergeskikte' roads, the Karoo, Wild Coast, West Coast and more.

Most roadies think that a track day are the ultimate training and makes them a good rider. I’m still of the view that a track day just makes you more reckless! Corné Kloppers 0849130391 ckloppers@gmail.com

I agree with the training day at Nelsons Creek for the RT's/GT's. The grass sounds good to. How will we get so far? Did they tar the access road to Nelsons Creek yet, or will they pick us up at the entrance with trailers? -:)

The entrance road to the training grass is very good! You can even ride a Harley on that gravel road... the road to the Campsite is a point for another discussion ;-) Corné Kloppers 0849130391 ckloppers@gmail.com

Corné re: training making you reckless the least safe riders are the least trained....why did you accept, and even pay for training, if it is going to make you reckless?? Ask gents such as Cliff, Alvin, Maxl, myself, Jane,Danie,Charles and others who have ACTUALLY done some track based training it is worth rechecking a veiwpoint as it my be incorrect.:-)

Chris seriously as per your comment, encourage road training, the road gents are getting almost none.

Neil not training... TRACK TRAINING! Because people think they can ride on public roads like they do on the track. Corné Kloppers 0849130391 ckloppers@gmail.com

Try it,then see!:-) Riding badly/ foolishly was taken to the track then on leaving was attempted elsewhese ie. the road, the track did not promote it, it may even have made them slightly better piggish riders but their attitude was there before going to the track, much like target shooting does not make you into a murderer/sniper, but will assist in making you into a better one if that is your bent. Ps. Plenty are doing a GREAT JOB of riding really badly without any training!!!:-) (cars and bikes)

We need PASSION! (And swinging both ways doesn't count!) It's going to take someone with the same passion about riding on tar and training on tar, as exists among the dirty fraternity, to get the track/tar/road training going. How about one of the roadies picking up the banner on this to get something going? I'm certain the committee will give their full support, and remember, BMW courses are for everyone, not just BMW riders. The road/track courses would in all likelihood see a good contingent of dirties and underpriveleged (ie JapBike riders :-) ) joining in and making it a worthwhile and sought after course. You'll have to find a venue with a LOOOONG straight section though ... for the Harleys :-) ''The world needs dreamers that DO!''

If you can dream it you can do it!
