Gamkapoort dam - A pictorial ride report.

Warren Ellwood's picture

First of all, all credit for all the photographs must go to Wayne Haylett. The man is a genius with a camera. These pictures are a few of  the 300 odd he took over the weekend. Many thanks Wayne, and for giving me the "rights" to use them here.

Right, now to the story.

Our route took us on a quick trip down the N1, through the Slanghoek Valley and into Ceres. Then out over Theronsberg Pass and into the Karoo, turning off first the R355 and then the R356 onto the Matjiesfontein Road.

Sian then rode on for quite a distance, all the way to Matjiesfontein in fact, but when we stopped she couldn't get off her bike and we then discovered her knee was quite badly damaged. Thanks Jackie for your help. So bike on trailer and Sian was taken to Worcester Medi Clinic and unfortunately Sian and Trevor would not return.

We lunched in Laingsburg and some us bought some extra meat and beverage as we were not sure what time the back up vehicle would get to us that evening. As it turns out, it was a good move.

We were worride when the backup had not arrived later: Fox told us we would get signal on a nearby mountainWe were worried when the backup had not arrived later: Fox told us we would get signal on a nearby mountain, which we did.

We luckily got hold of Wendy and Pam as they were on the way to Beaufort West. When they hadn't arrived a few hours later, Mike and I went for a ride in the dark back up the pass and eventually met the girls at the entrance to the valley, after almost getting taken out by a flying kudu (no photo, sorry).

When the backup finally arrived, we got down to some cooking and chatting. When the backup finally arrived, we got down to some cooking and chatting.

A good evening was had by all, some more than others. There was quite a wind blowing but it didn't seem to dampen spirits.

After Ladysmith Wayne's photo's sort of stop, I think he, like everyone else was praying to stay upright as the rain suddenly came down in buckets.

The scene of Hein's oops. The scene of Hein's oops.

The roads became treachorous and sometimes bloody dangerous as we made our way towards the promised tar 120km away. Hein had a fall and elected to put his bike on the trailer and the rest of us just plodded on.

When we finally reached the tar it had stopped raining and was clearing up. But when we phoned Trevor in Cape Town he told us it was hailing. Thankfully we seemed to ride around the rest of the rain and arrived home in fairly nice conditions.

Once again, I just want to thank everyone on this trip for making it memorable, both for the company and the spirit. I remember looking at Gerald one time where we stopped to check for headlights coming in the pouring rain, when we saw them he just gave me a nod, which said "let's get on with it". That summed up our situation, nothing we could do but get on with it. And we did.

Let's do it again some time, how's everyone's diary for 2025 looking Wink.

Thank you: Warren Thank you

I managed to stay upright on Sunday's short mud challenge ONLY because I has a well balanced meal for breakfast - half a large tin of Koo Fruit Salad, ostrich boerewors, Cadburys friut and nut chocolate and a mug of tea.

I don't know whether I am sad or glad that I missed this one. Congratulations to everyone - it is not easy to ride in mud. I hope that Sian and Hein are OK.

Fantastic pics.

Just had a look at Wendy's photos - what a lovely reminder for all who were on the ride - I take my hat off to each and every one of you who rode in those trecherous conditions and made it home in one piece! The photos of my knee will always be a reminder for me to SLOW DOWN before going through a water crossing. Stitches will be removed tomorrow, but I will have to wear the leg brace for another 4 weeks or so as I slightly compromised my crutiate ligament. Once I have finished with the brace it will be donated to the medical kit Smile. Thank you to everyone who helped me in my time of need!

Glad you're doing okay Sian.  Please rest your knee - I know it's not easy, especially this time of year.  But if you don't you'll be sentenced to another two weeks in the brace - very itchy and unpleasant in summer!
