Experiencing the Overberg as a pillion*

Being fairly new to the club, a short intro might be best ?

Born in Franschoek, the French of origin surname is somewhat fitting. I was fortunate enough to spend some of my formative years growing up on farms and experiencing all that goes with that, including off road bikes. My Dad, an extremely special gentleman and one of the most unique inderviduals I've ever had the pleasure of knowing, truly loved bikes, the out doors and his passion for exploring I think lives on in me.

As they say, only the good die young and unfortunately he is no longer with us, but, is certainly doing some over time as a guardian angel for this busy fire sign.

Having forbidden me from riding, other than with him of course, ( Dads would understand this ), he possibly had a hand in myself and Theo meeting. I count myself extremely lucky to have met such an amazing person, who, goes out of his way to make every ride an absolute pleasure.

I've wanted to get my license for sometime, to allow me to do a few trips in Dad's honor. One of many bucket list items and I'm happy to say, I'm making progress in that regard. Just need to find that " something BMW ".

For now though, I'm exploring as a pillion and loving every minute. Unfortunately for Theo, I come with baggage - wet wipes, lip ice, a hair brush and a camera, are now standards found in his top box. " It's a French thing ", as the GS Trophy team might agree ?

Setting off from Durbanville, in a cool 12'c at 7:00am on Sat, we headed for the BP in Somerset West to meet the rest of the group. Sheer delight comes in various forms and I must say, the delicious Wild Bean latte, to warm very cold hands, was most welcome.

With a quick brief from our brave leaders, Geoff Edwards and Andyman, we headed up Sir Lowrey's pass, in two groups, in the direction of Caledon. Coming down Sir Lowry's, the view of the Overberg is always a special treat. It not only reminds me of a patch work quilt, but, you feel like you leaving the city behind and that's what this is all about.

Turing off into Caledon, past gents in PJ's and ladies in shorts, the temp still wasn't much more than 12'c, we found ourselves winding our way down into the valley above the clouds / mist. A simply magical experience. The crisp winter air, so refreshing experienced on two wheels vs four.

Our second briefing, complete with the most beautiful bird life, the milk truck and two very bubbly ladies in a Hyundai, meant a few slightly newer pillions taking to gravel, hopefully a little more at ease.

The route both scenic and smooth, reminded us how incredibly lucky we are to call this beautiful country home. Blessed indeed.

Stopping to regroup

Soon there after, our third stop was upon us. We greeted the group on Triumphs and headed for our fourth stop, Jongensklip Station.

A couple of twists and turns later, a few interesting dwellings and countless sheep, we were in Greyton, passed by a different kind of " horse power ".

Different kind of Twin

Lunch was our next stop at the fantastic Searle's Trading Post. Whether you indulged in the amazing burgers, pizzas or curry buffet, I think you will agree, we left with our kit feeling just a tiny bit tighter. I highly recommend stopping here to anyone passing through Greyton. The cozy atmosphere, parrot, miniature dolls house, interesting decor and friendly, efficient service, is the heart of small town hospitality, an absolute pleasure to experience. The youngsters on piano, an added treat. Thank you!

Refueled, we headed out of Greyton, direction Cape Town, past the old prison. A few more twists and turns behind us, we stopped outside the Botrivier Hotel. Bikes and kit various shades of brown, testament to another great adventure on the back roads, few get to experience.

In short, for me, this trip was ...

  • Experiencing new places
  • Taking a turn above the clouds
  • Georgeous blossoms on the trees
  • Beautiful autum hues in the orchards
  • Friends old and new
  • A delish piping hot latte
  • Frost on the fields
  • Newly born lambs with fleece as white as snow
  • Taking photos at 1169 feet
  • Quality time with my amazing other half

Welcome to my version of adventure biking ...

PS : Did you check your mirrors?

PSS : Thank you to everyone for making this a really special day out and a great start to my holidays.

Thanks for sharing LeeWP.

I must also add that I truly enjoyed this trip. The "slower" pace was perfect to take in an appreciate this beautiful country that we live in. It is always nice to see quite a number of new faces and to meet new people on trips like these. No matter what size, age, sex or race we are, we all share the passion for nature and what better way to enjoy this than on 2 wheels.
