Dixies - Inaugural Ride

The first BMW Club Ride took place 27 years ago when a group of enthusiasts took the first ride to Dixies in December. Since then every year the club has celebrated the inaugural ride. Ladies Mile "re-group"Ladies Mile "re-group" On the morning of the Dixies run, the weather was right for a perfect ride. A slight chill in the air with no clouds and absolutely no wind. This year 17 bikes gathered at the Plattekloof Engen, heading of to Ladies Mile. At Ladies Mile approximately another 10 bikes joined the group for a ride over Ou Kaapseweg. Johan and Zana waited at the top of Ou Kaapseweg and joined the group. En daar vat die bikers al weer oor.En daar vat die bikers al weer oor. I stayed right at the front of the group – fearful of getting lost in the “deep south”. We had hardly turned right onto the road leading to Simonstown when Brian made a U-turn. “O-no, how did Brian get us lost now?” was the first thing that shot through my mind. It was only after I had made the U-turn that I realised we were actually at Dixies – what a relieve. And THIS is how a parking lot should look !!And THIS is how a parking lot should look !! I was still waited for the last people to get seated at our table when the first round of coffees was delivered. A few minutes later Danie arrived with two more people from the Somerset West. And finally one of the longest serving active members of the club arrived – on a bike, which he apparently bought brand new. Apparently Cheezy bought this beauty brand new.Apparently Cheezy bought this beauty brand new. The coffee cups had not cooled down when the orange juices were brought out. The breakfast and the service were absolutely top-notch. I counted 30 bikes, with a large number being “older” or vintage. There even was a 1959 model BMW – with 92 000 miles on the clock!! A young man has recently bought this bike from the estate of collector that passed away. LOW milage vintage '59 modelLOW milage vintage '59 model Surely a 100 km round trip is an insult to any self respecting BMW rider as a breakfast run. So where would we go for the “after-ride”? Around Cape Point, over Ou Kaapseweg (Chappies closed AGAIN), Houtbay, along the coast and then onto Signal Hill for an ice cream. More than 30 % of the group started on the “after-ride”, even the ’59 model. At Ou Kaapseweg a number of riders headed home. 8 bikes made it to Signal Hill. Stretching of the legs just past Cape Point.Stretching of the legs just past Cape Point. Stop-Go after ScarboroughStop-Go after Scarborough Fortunately the ice cream truck was not at Signal Hill. No option but to ride to the lower cable way station. When we stopped at the lower cableway the wind had started picking up and the clouds started rolling in over the mountain. Just in time for us to realise how fortunate we had been the whole day with the stunning weather we had. Final Ice cream stop.Final Ice cream stop.

Hi Fellows Allow me correct some of the misconceptions in the above. The first run (1979)was to the Purple Cow ice cream parlour in Sea Point (Do any of you remember this place?) which has subsequently closed down. I am the second owner of this machine, came complete with owners manual, tool kit and indicators (still tpo be fitted) Date of birth: 1966. Remember!! Bum in the saddle, always.

Padlangs, When you say original group what do you actually mean? Founder members - Only me, Wally Young possibly one of the first to join the club, still got 2 X BMW's 1955 R 50 and 1979 R100S. Oscar, Geoff, Donald, Johan, Klaus,Deon, and Ivor have been with the club for absolutely ages, I am pleased to say. Then there is Willie who was with the club in the early 80's and moved up to Middleburg TVL and is now back in the Mother city. And there are a number who have left RSA and some who have departed, bless their souls. I will do a story on the beginnings of the club some day, Paul Weber should have the original of the story I did some time ago. Bum in the saddle, always.

Hey guys give it time, I have 27 years to try and recollect and when you achieve MY age this takes time. This is something that the younger generation can look forward to. Annie if I had your writing skills it would be a lot easier. In this case time is not of the essence. And to all those well mannered people out there "I do not expect to see comments about my age". Hi Cheesy, I still think you look well preserved for someone touching 80. I can understand that it will take some time to write something on any electronic media since you grew up with slates to write on. I however also know that at your age people are thinking of the past all the time. So, remembering all the nice things should come easy. Enjoy the Bum in the saddle.

Was the story on the club's history ever written Rene?

Hello Zanie, If memory serves me correctly Annie did a write up on the clubs history.

The first meeting was held in a flat in Pinelands, August 1979, 6 or 7 of us. Mike Clapham, Brian Joyce, Brian Peake (in Canada) Brian Hultzer, the initiator (riding that highway in the sky) Margie, Brian's better half and me. Why do I recall Gary Wheeler?

It was decided to give it a go, calling cards were displayed on all the BMW's we saw and the very first meeting was helds at the Glendower hotel on Main Rd Observatory. The place was packed. Brian H outlined the objectives etc. Our second meeting was held at Forries, that did not last long, BUT the first T shirt was displayed by Margie. The imprinted boxer motor exhausts ports promptly came to rest on the nipples and all agreed that was the emblem to have, Earnest I think still has one. We then went to the Mobray Bowls club, the bowls members did want biker hooligans on their premises and eventually we ended at the German Club, Now that was BAD news. Meetings lasted, maximum 6,5 minutes, if there was an A G M the meeting was extended to 7,0 minutes. (One should remember that bikes of that era were very similar, so discussing the boxer motors idiosyncrasies was the common denominator) Then we would move to the long counter and extend the discussion whilst enjoying a beer or three, some mornings we would get home at about 03,00. The Huntsman Hotel in Firgrove is a subject for another time. How does one go home when the sun is peeking over the Hottentots mountains, BUT it was certainly a great party.

Very seldom would the membership rise above 40 paid up guys, women had not been liberated then. We enjoyed week ends away breakfast runs every second week Ja, it was a most enjoyable time.

We were then asked to leave the German club and Hennie B C organized the Multi-motor club. Then the 1100G S arrived and slowly the rot set in.

One of the most amazing things about this club since inception, there is no drama, politics, religion or cliques. Fun and enjoyment has always been the main core.

When new members join very soon they will feel that this is home or they will move on. We have also enjoyed the company of some different guys who have enjoyed spending some quality time at the taxpayers expense. So yes we have had them too, the warts are there.  The reason we were told to leave the Purple Cow was down to one man, guess who?

Think before you ink.
