Rain, snot, sun, fun and humble pie.

So I reckon I wasn’t the only one lying awake at 3am listening to the rain pounding down thinking, are we really going to go ride motorcycles in this. I was up by 6, standing outside, getting wet, not believing that so many weather sites could be so wrong.

But there is something about leaving home prepared and ready, I can’t explain it but when I leave home dressed in my rain gear it is not so bad. Anyway, it was dry on the way to the rendezvous.

By 08H00 I had 8 folks altogether not joining us anymore and as the rain came down again in buckets I wondered if they were the clever ones, and which weather websites did they use. I even got an SMS from Tony telling me he has to bale on the trip; he was standing 2 meters away from me at the time.

Anyway, but the time we were ready to leave, it had stopped raining and we left with no specific plan other than to try and ride around any further rain. No route, no plan, just a destination.

I decided to stick to the tar and get north as I had spoken to one or two farmer mates of mine and they assured me the weather was not as glum in their part of the world. On the back road to Malmesbury we had a few drops and I canned the idea of going via the Riebeecks as it looked very black that side. In Malmesbury John got half the group lost but eventually we all got to Moorreesberg where we refueled as a plan was starting to form in my mind as the clouds were fast disappearing and we found ourselves bathed in winter sunshine.

Our first taste of dirt was alright, the roads were very wet but no real mud yet as every one got a chance to feel what it’s like to be me , no dust Cool. This however changed when we took a small back road in order to cross the Berg River. Suddenly there were long stretches of slimy snotty very wet mud and before we got to the river it had claimed its first victim in the form of my wife. She seems to have hurt her ribs and now her one errr… upper body part is a wonderful blue color. The irony was where the river was barely a trickle on our recce last Sunday, it was now raging and the whole drif was under water, so we had to turn around and go back through all the mud to get out.

We made it to the safety of the R399 without further incident and then turned off again into the Kapteinskloof. Here the real sports began as we encountered very long stretches of the slippery stuff. Leon Lee went down after performing a 720 degree spin, full throttle, Graham went down in sympathy, John Geldenhuys decided the sloot at the side of the road looked much less muddy and found out the hard way it wasn’t. One of the disadvantages of riding up front is that one misses all the action, and it seemed I missed a lot on this short stretch of road.

But anyway, after this the roads were fairly dry, the scenery fantastic as the whole world is green and we got to the farm nice and early.

The afternoon and evening were as usual lots of fun, we learned all about Leon finances, Tony started a new line of Bluetooth devices, lots of laughter, the supper was excellent, and the rugby was …well enough said. Well done Bokke (I also have a Springbok rugby jersey in my cupboard).

When we awoke we were greeted by absolutely stunning winter weather, not a cloud in the sky. After a hearty breakfast we set off on a short but entertaining ride around the bottom part of the farm. I must also point out that Leon Lee, who had eventually shared a room with Rob Selig, was up at “my place” very early to tell me he was handing in his crown as the club champion snorer. According to him he has met his match completely. He was even scared of this log sawing machine.

A few spills and thrills in the river bed, we headed back to camp, to pack up, say our goodbyes and hit the road. I must comment here how some folks riding has improved since the last time we did this little course. I noticed it as there were a lot less spills this year. Geoff Edwards is one who comes to mind, you can see how his riding has improved quite clearly.

Some more gravel to and from Clanwilliam to Citrusdal and then over the pass which had taken me 5 years to ride and now I think it is one of the more spectacular passes around. On the other side the road becomes tar but it is still one of the more beautiful rides around added to this was the snow on the mountain tops not so far away from us. Steven asked me what the name of the pass was and I couldn’t answer him as I didn’t really know, but on T4A it seems to have three different names. Elandskloof, Middelberg and Buffelshoekpass are all listed on the map.

Into Ceres, stop, say goodbyes and head home over Bainskloof, which I found really slippery.

I had arranged to visit Rob for a braai, but after washing bikes etc, I suddenly realized I was finished and eventually didn’t even make the Sunday night movie.

So, thank you to everyone that came with for being part of another memorable club weekend, I had a ball and I hope you all did as well.

A special word of thanks to the following.

Trevor Versveld, for taking us to Boegoeberg two weeks ago to install the dish in the lapa so we could watch the rugga up there, and also for providing us with the backup vehicle for the weekend. Much appreciated.

John Geldenhuys for being the main man on the dish job and for the use of your projector and decoder and all your help with this, although I still think the final posistion of the dish was a fluke. But anyway, free navigation lessons for you as a reward.

To Pam and Adrian for manning our backup vehicle again. Also very much appreciated.

Leon Lee for sweeping the group and providing all sorts of entertainment, whether on or off the bike.

And lastly the whole De Beer family for making us so welcome, their hospitality, excellent venue, food and everything was as usual just great.

Right, after two very full weekends of motorcycles, I think I shall have to pay some attention to the wife, house and pets this weekend. If you looking for me I’ll be in my garage…………………

Hope to see you all soon.

Cheers

Warren

What a brilliant trip.  Beatutiful landscapes. Great company. 'Interesting' conditions. Excelllent spit-lamb.  What a wonderful world I live in.

My thanks to Warren for arranging this so well; to everyone else whose effort made it all possible - and to my fellow travellers for the laughs and fun.

Now - does anyone know of a good place to get the caked-on mud off my bike? Wink

There's a bike nut at Ryan's car wash in the parking garage next to the Claremont Pick n Pay that will give your bike a very good spit and polish for about 100 rond.

Let it be.

Another fantastic weekend organised by the Ellwoods.  These trips are always good fun, always interesting and not to be missed.

Thanks for the kind words Warren. When I started riding off-road Andy said it is all about getting miles under the belt. The club has given me the opportunity to get those miles under the belt with the many rides that are available. So, if my riding has improved, it is thanks to you and those who have organised the many rides on which I have ridden. In the last two years I have ridden about 50 000 km mostly off-road and mostly with the club. I am sure that there isn't another club in SA that does so much for its members. Thanks a million to you all.

Jane: "Where's it hurt?"

Graham: "Right here" (pointing to his maximus gluteus)

Thank goodness the bike is OK. Lorna will kill me if I ever come home with a damaged bike again.

Brilliant photos as usual Adrian Smile  and thank you to everyone who took photos and spared the time to add them to this report. I had a great weekend - the muddy roads were a great learning curve for me - I find riding on/in mud easier than sand - must be a head space thing!

Thanks to Warren and Natalie for letting us share their 'love shack' - although Natalie was asleep before anyone else!
