The game plan was to raid swiftly to Juffroushoogte near Vredendal on all styles of dirt for lunch and then home by tar.

The ride is already famous amongst all DS bikers as the railroad track route from Kalbaskraal to the R27 on the other side of Hopefield. 162 kilometres of concentration.

Transnet Freightl Rail (TFR) lock some of the gates, but an eagle eye and adventurous spirit will spot the  way around these 'obstacles'

As it was an advanced ride, we ommitted the brieifng. We communicated by 2-way radio and we kept up a reasonable good pace, despite the obstacles.  It was fun.

Only 5 riders booked for this ride.

Andy R1200GSA, Charles R1150GS, Eric F800GS, Arno R1200GSA and Peter R1200GSLC.

Ideal group size for an advanced ride.

Arno would call on the radio from sweep when there was a delay over terrain. We would slow up in front.

I guess we spread the 5 bikes over almost a kilo distance to have clear space between the bikes. As you do when raiding swiftly over terrain.

I'm glad it was not a mating dance.. But that is how you recognise Badger in the distance, the rider bobs nown n then. It's comforting as you know he is always having full spacial awareness.

Superb report Andy.  Must have taken a good while to do - thanks.

I no longer tilt my mirrors because:

  1. The one is getting a bit rickety so I try to leave it alone, and
  2. When I am commuting I sit a lot and stand occasionally, so it isn't worth tilting the mirror - but I still need to check my 6 so have gotten into the habit of bobbing.

It really was nice to ride with a more experienced group for a change.  And even if one of us were less capable, we would be inspired by what we see from the rest, rather than frightened from seeing other riders hesitate or fall.

With better comms running, and more experienced ride leaders, we should consider splitting groups into smaller packs like this for some rides.

I did appreciate getting home at 15h00, to enjoy a cuppa and chat with Julie before washing the bike and kit.

Hey Andy,

Thanks for a great ride, and a great report! Definitely pleased I came. Nice group. You've gotten some really decent pics there out of your go-pro.

Thanks to Mike at Rockfox for the last-minute help with a set of crashbars - beyond the call of duty!!

Took me a good hour and a half to get the bike clean again.
