Our weekend trip on the GS’s
On Saturday 12th April, we woke early for a lazy weekend at home.
But a few hours later, after the umpteenth BMW passed my house- by God there are now very many BM’s passing my house all day- my palms began to itch so Annie n I packed our bikes for an overnight out in the cuds and of we went…….
I just spent a week on a business trip in the North and was travelled out totally.
But as my bum left the saddle and the wind vented through my jacket I realised it was the hire car that had tired me.
Energy filled my body as we glided out of Gordon’s Bay following the front wheel. It took us to GK’s pad who had Brendan with him fitting a shock to his GS, so no go there and we continued out of town…….towards Stellenbosch.
Soon we found ourselves following the front wheels up du Toits Kloof Pass.
Over the other side, via Rawsonville sparse traffic and good roads soon found us breaking for lunch at the “Dam Fine Café” on Boshimela on the Slanghoek road.
After a restful lunch we followed Slanghoek out to the R310- up Bainskloof, so we stopped to overnight at Steenbok Park, in our log cabin.
Annie had hastily packed some beers, Hunters and a bottle of crisp dry white, ‘swell as some fillets and salad stuff before leaving home.
So we braaied and chatted under the starlight as the half moon rose up eventually drowning the stars with her light.
Sunday 13th April dawned lazy and slow, just like a Sunday should be.
After a brekky of poached eggs an bacon, we slowly got going and went off over the pass to Wellington. We passed or joined or were overtaken by many bikes out enjoying the day. Where were the Beamers? We never saw any as we rode the Boland roads towards Somerset West.
Only in Strand did we pass some BMW’s coming the other way.
There’s something about riding a good bike on an open road that blows all cobwebs away and injects real joie-de-vie in your body.
So in the end, all the planned weekend chores never got done at home and that’s a fact.
And all afternoon, GS bikes have been passing by the house, single or in pairs. There seems to be so many more in Gordon’s Bay than ever before.
Another weekend on the bikes has passed by in the blink of an eye.
