All Passes

A BIG thank you to Geoff and Brian for the lovely trip. Also thank you to for the backup driver - unfortunately his services was required (more about this later). This trip was too fantastic for a single person to write a trip report. Thus I am asking everyone to add their experiences here ....

A few months ago Geoff sent out an email telling us about this event. The next morning was “very active” on the forum, regarding the All Passes ride. By lunch time the event was SOLD OUT ! Riders briefingRiders briefing Geoff led the “faster” riders, while Brian took the more sedate riders. Brian’s group met at the normal breakfast run starting point. After the riders briefing we set off for Worcestor via the N1. I was just getting comfortable when Brian turned of the N1, at Klapmuts. The next moment we were enjoying Helshoogte ! Back towards Paarl and then over Du Toits Kloof Pass, towards the Trout Farm for breakfast. Must say they were well prepared, except for one spoon .... Both groups had breakfast together. I left a little before the others to get a few pictures of the group. Brian leading his groupBrian leading his group Geoff leading his groupGeoff leading his group Then I had some fun catching up to the group. I caught up with the group just in time to see that Brian had even more detours in mind. Note to “self” – stay with the group, or make very sure where Brian is going .... We rode to Worcester via Rawsonville. Imagine our surprize when we saw that there was still snow on the mountains. From Worcestor we rode towards Touwsriver. De Doorns was an absolute portrait of beauty ..... Postcard beautifullPostcard beautifull Just before Touwsriver we turned off towards the KOO Valley and Montague. Time for even more photographs. The LAST action shot of this ST :(The LAST action shot of this ST :( Just one word - LEKKERJust one word - LEKKER In Montague a few bikes needed petrol. Just as we left Montague Geoff’s group came in, also stopping for fuel (at a different fuel station). Brian even pulled over to ensure that his group was “together”, we then headed out to Barrydale. It would seem that “certain individuals” (no names mentioned) believe there GPS’s more than their eyes and took a little detour towards Barrydale .... :) Country Pumpkin once again outdid themselves with the lunch. By now a few individuals were talking of going directly to Oudtshoorn, instead of doing some more passes with the group. We headed out towards Ladismith, and turned off towards Riversdale to do the Garciapass. What a parking lot ....What a parking lot .... At Riversdale we had some cooldrinks and then headed out to Oudtshoorn via Mosselbay and the Robinson pass. A few tired “postereurs” wanted to stop at Eight Bells. However “some others” insisted on going straight to the rugby screens .... Well this is the view they missed. How do you describe such beauty ??How do you describe such beauty ?? Saturday night we went to La Dolcevita (spelling?). What happened here will stay “private”, except for certain “cross dressers” that MUST be exposed .... (Not even the pinkest of Niels shirts caught any attention) Who let the KT$#% people in ??Who let the KT$#% people in ?? James you gave us a freight !! GLAD you are okay.James you gave us a freight !! GLAD you are okay. Sunday morning we all had breakfast bright and early. Then it was time for the Outeniekwapass to George. It is such a stunning pass that I rode all the way to the bottom and then back up to where the group stopped to take in the scenery. Off we went to Mosselbay for some fuel. Apparently the 27 liter tank of the RT CAN take 27 liters …. Just how much further do you think I could have gone?Just how much further do you think I could have gone? All the way down to Suurbraak on the N2 and then the Tradouwpass to Barrydale. Lunch was in Montague so everybody started pushing on a little. The BMW club has visited “The Docks” a few times – and with this level of service we will be back again. Cool by the pool ....Cool by the pool .... Another view of "The Docks"Another view of "The Docks" A few people found it a little difficult to “get going” after lunch. But eventually we were of to Ashton, Robertson and Worcestor. At Worcestor a few people took a shortcut home. However, Brian carried on toward Villiersdorp to also do the Franschoek pass. Just as we left Worcestor Thys pulled over and switched on the hazards on his motorcycle. We stopped and heard that his back tire had a puncture. Out with the Wild@Heart compressor and the “rope kit”. I wish had timed it, I truly believe it was less than 3 minutes to fix the leak and inflate the tire. Unfortunately the fuses kept blowing at a pressure of 1,8 bar, so Thys headed back to Worcestor to fully inflate the tire. This was not going to get us down. Villiersdorp, Franschoek, Helshoogte and finally back home .... THANK YOU to every one for a fantastic weekend.

Cliff and James went straight from Barrydale to Oudtshoorn. The details are still unclear, but James "put the ST down". FORTUNATELY James is okay. A cut to his leg and a "cracked shoulder". :) His bike does NOT look good. :( Always sad to see bikes on the backup trailer.Always sad to see bikes on the backup trailer. Suspension Shade. I often forget to set the ESA up before we set off - the back end (of the bike feels HORRIBLE in the corners. Once the ESA has then be set correctly the bike is STABLE ..... (Niel do you see a nice toppic to stir with?)

ESA - Electronic Suspension Adjustment Jy het MSA, Manual Suspension Adjustment :) That big knob that is used to set the rear suspension. Some would say, soft for off road, hard for on road, others would write a thesis instead of just riding the bike .....

Not sure we know as James has little recollection of the incident and Cliff who was riding with him saw nothing as he was in front.

Thanks for a super report Padlangs. Geoff is right, I can't tell you exactly what happened, as I found myself on loose gravel at the left hand side of the road and then off the road into the ditch and then into the rocks....... Lady Luck was with me as my injuries are minor, bad cut on left leg, 20 stitches, and cracked shoulder blade. You should see the rock!!!! Thanks again to Neels for the back-up which came along pdq and took me to hospital, and to all the rest of you for good wishes. Sadly my bike seems to need to go to the happy hunting ground for write-offs (to be confirmed). James.

James I just put up a "brief factual" account of what Brian's group had the pleasure to experience. Now I am hoping that somebody will do the same for Geoff's group. Then if more people would input their "special experiences" - as this is what a trip report is actually about. Looking forward to some GOOD stories ....

Thanks for the trip report Padlangs , I'm still waiting with bated breath for Freak to write his Freak Report . My personal highlights of the trip were the riding , the riding and the riding . It was awesome , being in a group of riders where the team spirit was so in sync , everyone just wanted to have the ride of their lives , there was no racing, just a nice steady pace . Ok there was also no slowing down for corners either , Geoff must be the only person that I know that not only does not slow down or break for corners, he actually increases his pace!!:) which needless to say was huge fun . I was honoured to ride with such skilled riders, and am still on a high :) The rest of the week -end was also great fun , the nice crowd, great food and acomodation , the lovely vibe at the Montague Reastaurant for Sunday lunch at the pool . Special moments : seeing the guys in my group ride , Hennie aka Mr KTM " stealing" an orange blanket from a 4 year old girl ( and still leaving her smiling? ) seeing "The Oscar " still enjoying bikes and himself so much at his age and after a serious op , and of course James recovering so gracefully after his accident, and many more special moments .
