20 Nov - Montague for Lunch - All Road

The last three Sunday’s have been marked with rainy weather, so building up the lunch ride, the weather seemed to play along, with a stunning day on the Saturday.
However Sunday came and so did the clouds....

Sunday morning started off with a sms at 05h35 (who sms's at that time) from Karin saying she is a little nervous about the rain and windy, she doesn’t like riding in it. I am not sure what i responded with but by 06h15, I was awake and told her to come to the meet and we take it from there.

07h30 and we arrived at the meeting point everyone pretty happy to be there! We had a few riders who choose not to ride but as the remaining riders filtered in, we decided to give it horns and go to Montague!

Our original route would have seen us go via Ceres into Montague but with the looming weather, we opted for a more direct route.

The weather played along all the way till be got Stellenbosch, there it started to drizzle a little, a little taste for what awaited us on the other side...
Franschoek say proper rain coming down, not this rent a little stuff, the real deal, big drops, the super soaker kind! We pulled off into the local BP to seek some cover, and to let the boys get the rain suites on! From here on in, we had rain pretty much most of the way to Montague!

Arriving at our Lunch spot, the Oude Kombuis Restaurant, Alan the proprietor was in a spin, the rain had caused him to move a large group indoors that was marked for outdoors. This didn’t really bother us as it took 10min to get out the rain suites for some, not mentioned our British lads...

Lunch was really good. From Lamb, Venison or Babotie Pie and again these are not the Pieman ones, proper! Salads and homemade salad dressing with breads was also out. Whilst munching down on some lunch the banter around the table was great. From Karin whipping out her massive camera (truly big!), to Mike and Chris recounting their glory days as younger men. Carry a bike in pieces over a pass because it was impassable and putting it back together again, these are the stories you don't often hear.

But as with all good things, we had to make our way home again.
Chris and Eldred went via Swellendam and the remaining riders took the direct N1 route back. Now riding back along the R60, the cross winds was something to deal with! I would have preferred the rain rather than the winds.

Coming over Du Toitskloof pass, we rode through some mist and where met by a view of note of stunning beauty.

Thanks to all for joining me on this ride and looking forward to more.
Willie took some pictures for us, so if you can please add them it would be appreciated.

 Thanks Again:
John

Take a suit, add an 'e' and you get 'sweet'.  As in 'honeymoon suite'.

So, it is:

  • Rain suit
  • GS Rallye 2 Pro suit
  • suit and tie
  • that moustache really suits you
  • en suite bathroom
  • honeymoon suite

Lyk my julle het almal die selle onderwyser op die plaas gehad.  Amper niemand kry dit reg (en dit is hoekom ek nou keelvol is en probeer om mense daaroor in te lig).

and John forgot to tell everyone that on the way back, between Robertson and Worchester, being the only girl and on the smallest bike, I was almost blown off my bike - and not once, but several times!!! that besides the point - it was a great first ride with a group and I want to thank John and the rest of the boys who were patient and kind and I never once felt that I was pushed beyond a place where I felt safe. this was my first out ride, first time in the rain - over 3 mountain passes and John was the best riding leader ever!! thanks again everyone
